The rug pattern is not printed, but is woven with multicolored dyed threads using a Jacquard machine, following the instructions on punched cards. As with Nishijin-ori textile for kimonos, its weaving selects thread through small holes in the cards and draws out the yarn for the pattern. The weaving method resembles the way that projecting pins on the cylinder of a music box create sound by striking the teeth of a comb.
